Toward a Cure: The SpinalCure Story

We’re making the unbelievable, believable.

We are Australia’s leading organisation dedicated to funding and promoting cure-focused spinal cord injury (SCI) research.

SpinalCure was co-founded over 30 years ago by Joanna Knott, the late Stewart Yesner (both of whom lived with spinal cord injuries), and Emeritus Professor Perry Bartlett, a renowned neuroscientist.

They were driven by a powerful belief: that spinal cord injuries can be treated — and ultimately cured. At a time when medical dogma claimed otherwise, they set out to challenge that thinking through groundbreaking, pioneering medical research.

Their vision remains our mission today: to find a cure for spinal cord injury.

SpinalCure has now grown to include a dedicated Board with representatives from the SCI and scientific community. We’re supported by a small but mighty team who are advocating at the highest levels to ensure that funding for spinal cord injuries remains high on the Government’s agenda.

We’re accelerating research through the collective strength of our incredible community — from generous donors and committed corporate partners to inspiring ambassadors, dedicated research collaborators, and our passionate, strategic team.

We are leading the Australian SCI community’s quest for a cure. We know it is within our reach. And with your support, we can get there even faster.

Spinal cord injuries happen daily

There is little that devastates a life more quickly or more thoroughly than a SCI. Every day in Australia another person will be injured, joining the ~21,000 Australians living with the terrible consequences of paralysis.

These injuries are mostly the result of everyday accidents and can be incurred by anyone at any age . These Australians are counting on us to find a cure for SCI.

Every step toward the cure

MAKING THE UNBELIEVABLE BELIEVABLE –TOGETHER

We’re building a movement where everyone affected by spinal cord injury can find community, purpose, and ultimately, a cure. That’s our promise to you.

At SpinalCure, we promise to:

Lead with hope and science.

We will pioneer breakthrough research while bringing proven treatments from laboratories to lives as quickly as possible.

Amplify your voice.

Your lived experience drives our mission. We will ensure your priorities shape research directions and government policy.

Invest wisely.

Every dollar we receive is directed with careful deliberation to the most promising research pathways that will accelerate our journey to a cure.

Build bridges, not silos.

We will foster collaboration between researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the spinal cord injury community to create a unified force for change.

Keep you informed.

The path to a cure is a shared journey. We commit to transparent communication about research progress, challenges, and breakthroughs.

Meet our Executive Team

“The area of research – finding a cure for spinal cord injury – is an under-supported field of medical science. Although no less important than cancer research or faculty degeneration, fewer Australians have direct or daily contact with the community in wheelchairs, and hence may overlook the importance of research funding, which is why it has captured our attention.”

FAQS

Who decides what research you fund?

We are guided by a Scientific Advisory Panel of experts in their respective fields:
Emeritus Prof. Perry Bartlett AO, Dr. Dinesh Palipana OAM, Prof. Marc Ruitenberg, Dr. Lionel King, Duncan Wallace. Read more about their backgrounds above.

What research have you funded?

Cure-focused research funded by SpinalCure over recent years, directly or through our lobbying work include:

  • eWALK1, neurostimulation (tSCS) for walking, NeuRA
  • eWALK2, tSCS for walking, NeuRA
  • Get a Grip, tSCS for upper-limb and respiration, NeuRA
  • RRULI, tSCS plus Acute Intermittent Hypoxia for upper-limb and respiration, University of Melbourne
  • RESTORE, VR for touch perception, UNSW
  • IVIG for acute SCI, UQ (SCA funded pre-clinical work)
  • Pre-clinical research which led to the development of NU-004 for MND/SCI, UQ
  • OMICS 2 OUTCOMES: Big data and machine learning to identify new targets for treatment, UQ
  • FAITH: Transferring fusogenic ability from nematodes to mammals, QBI
Why don’t you receive more government funding?

Spinal cord injury research receives less than 0.1% of all medical research funding.

Despite affecting  ~ 21,000 Australians and costing our economy $3.7 billion annually, SCI research remains critically underfunded. Government funding is extremely competitive.

Since 2019, we have secured over $30 million for research from the Federal, NSW and WA governments, philanthropy, business and our community. We continually strive to build greater partnerships with our government networks to highlight the vital need for further significant investment in cure-focused SCI research.

Are you a registered charity? (Registered DGR1 status, ACNC)
